A Song for Bariga

Bariga,

brown and beautiful;

a cousin to Mushin, Ajegunle’s twin

Bariga,

your sweat congeal to form clouds

and a flood is formed

Bariga,

your gutters asphyxiate,

chocking from the household wastes in their throats

Bariga,

muezzin’s call – an alarm to duty;

nightly liturgy steals our nostalgic dreams

Bariga,

insalubrious land of gold

where talents grow on trees and sometimes litter the ground in rot

Bariga,

there is beauty in dirt,

a golden fish in rubbish

Bariga,

since you’ve become a home for my head

a song for you I sing.
